HOW DOES IT WORK?
1. Interview with the vehicle user
The user’s input is very important when planning a renovation project. We establish how the engine (vehicle) behaves in different driving modes, which repairs have already been carried out, what causes problems and what the customer’s expectations are. Based on this data and our valuable experience with previous examples of a particular engine model, a rough technical/economic scope of work is determined.
2. Inspection and diagnosis
To help diagnose problems and determine the degree of wear, the engine is first thoroughly inspected and detailed measurements of individual components are taken. This provides us with a comprehensive view of the engine’s condition and allows us to determine which elements need to be restored.
3. Preparation and presentation
We prepare and propose a plan of necessary tasks and confirm the cost estimate with the customer.
4. Disassembly and cleaning
After the diagnosis, the engine is disassembled and carefully cleaned down to the smallest components. This allows us a thorough inspection and a proper removal of dirt, oils and residues, which is crucial for an effective restoration.
5. Repeated measurements and comparison
By repeated measurements and comparison with factory tolerances, we can confirm the diagnosis of cause-and-effect defects. We pay attention to any slightest anomaly noticed on the parts, or which an experienced technician perceives is not of common appearance (e.g. a possible previous repair).
6. Restoration of components
All worn or damaged engine components will be replaced or restored. This includes grinding and surface treatment, replacement of seals, bearings, rings, belts, bolts, guides and other parts as required per Automotiv®’s proven restoration method.
7. Custom grinding and honing
For engine cylinders, we make use of grinding to measure and honing. If the cylinders are too worn and this is not possible, we replace the cylinders with new liners made of the highest quality material identical to the original composition. This ensures an optimal fit and tightness of the most vital engine part – the pistons and the valves.
8. Engine head testing and valves checking
The engine head is carefully inspected and the exhaust and intake valves are checked, serviced and replaced if necessary. We ensure the appropriate tolerance of the guides and adjust them for maximum tightness in conjunction with the machining of the valve seat angle geometry. A well-prepared cylinder head has a major impact on the performance of direct injection engines (both petrol and diesel).
9. Rotating elements checking and measurement
All rotating elements such as the main shaft, connecting rods, camshafts, pump and balance shafts are inspected and measured to ensure optimum tribological conditions, lubrication and regulation, since a large part of the friction and cooling is regulated via the sliding surfaces of these elements.
10. Assembly and adjustment
Once all the components have been restored, the engine is carefully assembled according to factory norms and methods. Here the correct installation of parts, the correct order and tightening torque of the bolts, as well as the correct tightness are all taken into account. Then the necessary final adjustments of both mechanical parts and the electronic calibration are carried out.
11. Testing and evaluation
After the motor has been assembled, thorough testing is carried out to check its performance and to eliminate any last irregularities. The engine is tested at different loads and speeds to repeatedly check its reliability and performance.
12. Final check
Before completing the restoration process, a final check is carried out to double-check that all components are correctly installed and are working flawlessly. Then the engine is ready to be handed over to the customer.
13. Handover
This is followed by handover to the customer and an invitation to a free engine inspection after 1,000 kilometres.
